February is full of fun!
We’re now through the first month of the year where the days are shortest, the cold is brutal, and preparing for the year ahead is in full swing.  Many people make resolutions for themselves every January and the top few are more exercise and eating better, among other healthy habits.  Well, one of our favorite quotes is “Gardening is cheaper than therapy AND you get tomatoes!”.  Yes, gardening is one of the best things you can do for yourself… creating a garden for food is a great way to know what you’re putting into your body, it’s cheaper than buying veggies and fruits at the supermarket, and a fun thing to do with the whole family.  Teaching kids where food comes gives wonderful lessons in science, patience, trial and error, can lead to cooking lessons, and provides together time!  Flower gardening also provides great health benefits like exercise, exposing you to the fresh air, and creating a peaceful mind.  It also increases your property value, which is a great bonus!  Gardening is like the old phrase, “Two birds, one stone” in that it gives so many helpful and beneficial life lessons.
Around Bauer’s, February brings so many interesting and fun things… Many of us know that February is American Heart Month and while you could guess that eating a diet high in fruits and veggies is beneficial, did you know that apples are a great source of heart helping properties?  February is also National Bird Feeding Month – while that may not sound like much fun to a non avid bird enthusiast, birds are very useful to all of us in everyday life.  Birds are a top pollinator of plants -> pollination is required to grow foods (and not just a vegetable garden but think of all the uses for corn, wheat, potatoes, etc) -> birds are vital to our world.  Of course there is Valentine’s Day smack in the middle of the month too.  And the best part- with the post holiday chores of January finished, February is a great month to begin planning your gardens and patio pots for the season!

Celebrate National Bird Feeding Month…
Bauer’s is hosting an educational Birding Seminar on February 10th at 10am with a birding expert as our guest speaker!  Attendees will learn about the different species of birds, what variety of seed they all prefer, and so much more.  All attendees will also receive handouts, a free bag of birdseed, and be entered to win a free year of birdseed from Bauer’s!  Please register online so we have enough seating.

Apple season going strong!
Bauer’s carries fresh, local, delicious apples through the winter going into early April some years.  Currently we have more than 10 varieties still available.  Stop in today and make some hearty overnight oats or a scrumptious apple cake for dessert (you can substitute homemade applesauce for the oil too!).  Looking for some new apple recipes?  Visit our Apple Recipe page and start cookin’!
